INSV Kaundinya: A voyage into India’s Maritime History

Sat, 18th April

Location: Nalanda (Learning Centre)

3rd Eknath Kshirsagar Memorial Lecture by Shri Sanjeev Sanyal,

Member EAC-PM.

What does it mean to sail when nature, not technology, decides your course? Shri Sanjeev Sanyal will recount the maiden voyage of INSV Kaundinya – a journey that set out from Porbandar on 29 December 2025 and reached Muscat seventeen days later, retracing one of the oldest maritime routes linking India with Oman. Sailing without engines or modern navigation, the crew relied entirely on wind, currents, and traditional seafaring knowledge. In this talk, Shri Sanyal reflects on what the voyage revealed about how monsoons and ocean currents shaped centuries of trade, cultural exchange, and connection across the Indian Ocean and why India’s maritime past lives not only in texts, but in the routes and winds that once linked it to the world.
