Description

Shipwreck was a constant threat to the Indo-Roman Ocean trade. It caused the encrustations on this amphora, probably once filled with Roman oil or wine.

To protect against danger, sailors carried amulets and figurines of the sea god Neptune – like the one displayed in this exhibition.
