Description
Shabti were funerary figures, often inscribed with a spell to make them perform tasks on behalf of the dead. Egyptians regularly had to engage in compulsory community service. If someone were unwilling or unable to participate, they might be able to appoint a proxy, and the same was envisaged in the afterlife.
