Description

A young man from Roman Egypt, his beard neatly trimmed, gazes at us across two millennia. He seems to raise his head, as if awakening in the afterlife. This was part of a larger funerary mask, placed over the face and torso. The vivid colours also convey a good impression of what painted stone sculptures would have looked like.
