Description

Swimming towards us, and looking us straight in the eye, a cuttlefish embraces this festive jar (krater) for mixing wine with water. It was probably made by Mycenaeans in Greece, and exported to Cyprus, where it was found in a rich tomb.

The English word copper (Latin cuprum) comes from Cyprus, a major source of ancient Mediterranean copper.
